Quote Contest for July 2007
One of my favorite jobs at Alibris was running the Quote Contest. I miss it! I read a book and I see a quote and think, that’s a good one. Then I wonder if it’s easily found on the Internet, which is a real trick these days.
Now that I’m blogging I figure why not start up my own Quote Contest. I’m not offering a monetary award, only public acknowledgment and your own personal gratification that you were the first to figure out the quote. So, here it goes, the first edition of the Used Books Blog Quote Contest. Read the following passage and you could be the winner.
“I grew up when I realized that everywhere was basically the same, and so were the women.”
Think you know? Simply leave a comment and identify the title and author of the quote. Thanks for playing and good luck!

Well, I’m a bit surprised that nobody took a guess at the quote. Too hard? Maybe. I went through the novel, dog-eared where I’d found interesting quotes, to see if I could add a second one as a hint. Unfortunately each one was instantly available on Google.
So instead I’ll tell you that one of the characters is a Zookeeper. Does that help?
Don’t be shy, comment today and take your guess at the inaugural Used Books Blog Quotation Contest.

Actually, I have no idea, but the quote does sound like the opening line of the novel and it is memorable . . . and enjoyable.

Great to see the Chisholm Trail Bookstore checking in, particularly since you’re a gifted reviewer yourself!

Steve, thanks for your interest and guess. The Life of Pi is incorrect, but an interesting choice and on my upcoming reading list.

Drat! Main character is the son of a zookeeper. Don’t have a copy of Pi but took a shot.
Actually my 1st impression on reading the quote was Updike. One of the “Rabbit” books most likely.

Interesting Steve. Updike is one of my favorite authors and it certainly does have a certain ring of Harry Angstrom. It’s tough to find Updike quotes that aren’t easily found on Google. So … it’s not Updike either.

Ghostwritten, by David Mitchell.
If that’s not it, someone’s plagiarizing someone. Or my resource has a glitch.

Chris, no plagiarism and no glitch! Ghostwritten by David Mitchell is correct.
Congratulations to Chris Tozer of Cat’s Cradle Booksellers for winning the first Used Books Blog Quotation Contest.
Thanks to all who played (both those who commented and those who lurked.) Subscribe to Used Books Blog or stop by in August for next month’s quote.
