The company is using a ban aid to fix the problem and it is not working. they should just cut their losses and be done with it. Yes whatever you do do not go back - do not go through a temp agency to work for Borders because don't do it is right you will loose everything. Unemployment will stop giving you money if they know you are working for a temp agency.

Don't go back!! I am guessing you are going to receive a severance? If you go back, you will lose this money. It is widely known this is what they have done throughout the years of layoffs. Greedy and evil. They keep this bit of information under wraps for the poor minimum wage workers.
Also, if you go back through this temp agency, when they do go under you will NOT be able to get unemployment. They are a very sneaky company. I hope upper-level stores are watching out for their trust-worthy employees.
I don't know how much I can stress: DO NOT go back to work for them. You will lose more than you realize.
Just by them telling you guys to go through a temp agency, speaks volumes about where this company is headed. They know the show is almost over.

meridien, the company I used to work for before I got laid off (not Borders) had part time people. they paid them for vacation time and sick time but not benefits. that is why I was saying that Borders was trying to get rid of their full time people so they could have more part time people. that way they don't have to pay the part time people for benfits vacationtime sick time. whichever way you look at it, Borders sucks they are not loyal to their people and they deserve to go under because of piss poor management all the way around.

I started Borders on July 19 2004. Yesterday I was laid off. We were working a full week and sometimes overtime. They told 200 of us to go through the temp agency and we can come back in a couple of weeks. So they can save on labor and insurance. As a matter of fact they asked us to work overtime on the day they got rid of us. They spent over 120,000 dollars painting the building and landscaping the outside. That's ridicious!
The insurance has went up 50 to 75 dollars a month on top of no raises. This company is a joke, but ill miss my coworkers and wish them all the luck.Im glad im out before they file bankruptcy.

My very last day was February 28.

I haven't been here in a few months and it's painful to read the newer people's posts. I found I was laid off (2009) when I tried to order a border on the Borders website and my discount wouldn't work. I left a message for H.R. (National) when I couldn't get into the benefits website to check on it. I get a voicemail telling me I had been laid off and to this day have NEVER received written notification from the company about the lay-off nor was I able to get unemployment since (do the math) working a range of hours from 0-39.5 averages out to an amount too low for me to collect anything. I did get food stamps. That helped. I now have insomnia, hate the company, have gotten fatter, read lots of free books from my library, miss my advance reader books, and won't take ONE step into a Borders store ever again. Good luck 2010 round of ex-employees!

well all i know is I'm going from paying $350 a mo. to $450 a mo. now for insurance on me and my family. All the while we are not getting any pay increases, still corporate employees get their many many thousands of dollar bonuses. Gotta love it, i'm bent over and raw, anyone got a wet wipe?

Molly, rather than health care reform being shaped by greedy companies, the opposite is happening: companies can get away with not paying health insurance by DECREASING number of employees, period. Unfortunately if it doesn't want to pay for full-time level of insurance, part-timers can just be done away with, and the number of full-time people can be controlled that way. Thoughts?

Borders has been trying to get rid of their full time employees for years. It is cheaper to run with part time people except for management. They don't have to pay them as much plus now you see they don't have to pay for their benefits. So the Obama administraytion played right into their greedy little hands. Just another clear cut way for Borders to screw all their employees over.
